School of Pharmacy


The School of Medicine, formerly known as the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering, was established in 2003 and was approved as a pilot reform School in Hubei Province in 2015. Currently, the school has more than 3,300 full-time undergraduate and junior School students. It offers six undergraduate majors, namely Nursing, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Pharmacy, Health Service and Management, and Rehabilitation Therapy, as well as three junior School majors, namely Pharmaceutical Production Technology, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, and Pharmaceutical Business and Management.Among them, the major of Pharmaceutical Engineering was approved as a talent cultivation program for strategic emerging (pillar) industries in Hubei Province and a pilot major for comprehensive reform in Hubei Province in 2012. In 2014, it was approved as a major authorized to confer double degrees. In 2015, "Biology and Pharmaceutical Engineering," jointly established with other related disciplines and majors, was approved as a key construction project for advantageous and characteristic discipline groups of higher education institutions under the jurisdiction of Hubei Province during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. In 2016, it was awarded the "Jingchu Outstanding Engineer Collaborative Education Program" project in Hubei Province. In 2017, it was approved as a pilot project for joint cultivation of technical and skilled talents by general undergraduate Schools and higher vocational Schools in Hubei Province. In 2019, the major of Pharmaceutical Engineering was approved as a construction site for first-class undergraduate majors in Hubei Province, and was also honored with the titles of a provincial-level teaching team and a provincial-level excellent basic teaching organization.

The school has established four teaching and research sections, namely Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Chemistry, and Basic Medicine. It has also built on-campus internship and training bases, including the Teaching Experiment Center, Human Morphology and Function Experiment Center, Virtual Simulation Experiment Center for Pharmaceutical Engineering, Nursing Training Center, Traditional Chinese Medicine Pavilion, Chinese Herbal Medicine Specimen Hall, and Medicinal Botanical Garden.

The school has a teaching team that is energetic, highly academically accomplished, and rich in teaching experience. Currently, there are 80 full-time and part-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, 20 are professors and associate professors, 31 hold doctoral or master's degrees, and 17 are dual-qualified teachers.Professor Zhan Yahua, the discipline leader and honorary dean, is a consultant to the Committee of Traditional Chinese Medicine Identification of the Chinese Association of Chinese Medicine and enjoys a special government allowance from the State Council. Chen Ping, the honorary dean, is a council member of the Hubei Pharmaceutical Association, the deputy director of the Hubei Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Natural Medicine, and a member of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Committee of the Chinese Professional Committee of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. He enjoys a special government allowance from the Hubei Provincial Government.In recent years, the school has undertaken a total of 45 scientific research projects, including those from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of Hubei Province, the Chenguang Program of Wuhan City, and the education bureaus of provinces and cities (4 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 projects from the Natural Science Foundation of Hubei Province, 2 projects from the "Chenguang Program" of Wuhan City, and 3 projects guided by the Education Department of Hubei Province). It has one project from the Wuhan High-tech Industry Technological Innovation Team Program and one excellent young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation team project of higher education institutions in Hubei Province. The school has compiled 10 textbooks and 6 monographs, published more than 114 high-quality academic papers, and been authorized with 1 invention patent.

Nursing (Undergraduate, Science, Four-year Program, Bachelor of Science Degree)

Training Objectives: To cultivate application-oriented nursing professionals who meet the needs of China's socialist modernization drive and the development of healthcare undertakings, and who have an all-round development in terms of morality, intelligence, physique, aesthetics, and labor. They should systematically master the basic theories, basic knowledge, and basic skills of nursing, possess basic clinical nursing capabilities, as well as preliminary teaching, management, scientific research, and innovative abilities. They are able to engage in nursing, prevention, and health care work in various medical and health care institutions.

Professional Advantages and Characteristics: The nursing major is constructed with the tenet of service, guided by employment, and based on the standards of job requirements. Pharmaceutical Engineering (Undergraduate, Science and Engineering, Four-year Program, Bachelor of Engineering Degree)

        Training Objectives: To cultivate high-quality application-oriented talents with a solid foundation in pharmaceutical engineering knowledge, who master the technical processes of pharmaceutical production and the basic technologies of electromechanical automation. These talents are capable of engaging in work such as pharmaceutical production management, operation and maintenance of automated pharmaceutical equipment, and pharmaceutical quality assurance, and possess strong practical abilities.

Professional Advantages and Characteristics: This major is included in the talent cultivation program for strategic emerging (pillar) industries in Hubei Province, a pilot major for comprehensive reform in Hubei Province, a major authorized to confer double degrees, a project of the Jingchu Outstanding Talent Program, a key major project at the university level, and a pilot project for joint cultivation of technical and skilled talents by general undergraduate Schools and higher vocational Schools in Hubei Province. Traditional Chinese Medicine (Undergraduate, Science & Engineering, 4-year Program, Bachelor of Science Degree)

Training ObjectivesTo cultivate high-quality applied professionals with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) thinking and knowledge of Chinese traditional culture, capable of inheriting TCM theories and techniques. Students will gain familiarity with the current development of Chinese herbal medicine resources, mastering fundamental knowledge and skills in herbal planting/cultivation, medicinal material preservation, herb identification, herbal processing, TCMpharmaceutics, and quality control of raw materials and formulations. Graduates will possess strong professional ethics, innovative thinking, and social service capabilities.

Professional Advantages and CharacteristicsWhile preserving the traditional TCM disciplinary framework, the program integrates modern scientific theories and methods for researching, developing, and processing Chinese herbal and ethnic medicines. It focuses on cultivating versatile applied talents proficient in "herb identification, herbal processing, quality/component analysis, and TCM formulation techniques," addressing critical workforce needs in the pharmaceutical industry.

Training Objectives:To cultivate high-quality applied professionals with basic knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine, mastery of disease prevention, health care, and rehabilitation skills, familiarity with health-related laws, awareness of emerging theories/technologies in health sciences, and proficiency in applying modern health management concepts. Graduates will design health management programs, train health service personnel, and oversee operations in health-related institutions.
