School of Life Sciences and Technology

As the vanguard of teaching and research, the core engine for disciplinary and professional development, a benchmark School for talent cultivation, and a demonstration model of “integrating party building with high-quality development and high-level discipline construction” at Wuhan University of Bioengineering, the School of Life Sciences and Technology has been awarded the title of “National Advanced Collective in Education” by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Ministry of Education. It is also recognized as a pilot reform School (4th batch) by Hubei Province, an advanced unit in ideological and political education for School students in Hubei Province, and an advanced grassroots party organization in Hubei Province. Since 2015, the School has jointly enrolled and trained professional master’s students with Huazhong Agricultural University and Hubei University of Technology. Currently, the School offers four undergraduate programs: Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Biopharmacy, with nearly 2,500 students. In 2021, the Bioengineering program was selected into the National First-Class Professional Construction List, while the Biotechnology program joined the Hubei Provincial First-Class Professional Construction List. The disciplinary cluster of Biology and Pharmaceutical Engineering was recognized as an “Outstanding Characteristic Disciplinary Cluster” of Hubei universities during the “13th Five-Year Plan” period. Additionally, the clusters of Bioengineering and Pharmaceutical Technology, as well as Biology and Modern Agriculture, were included in the “Outstanding Characteristic Disciplines (Clusters)” of Hubei universities for the “14th Five-Year Plan” period.

The School boasts a dynamic teaching and research team characterized by academic excellence and rich experience. Current faculty includes: Over 30 professors and associate professors, 26 doctoral degree holders, 1 “Hubei Distinguished Teacher” , 6 provincial-level talent program recipients, 3 experts admitted to Wuhan’s “Yellow Crane Talent” program, 1 Hubei Provincial Industrial Professor, 2 Wuhan Municipal Innovation Talent awardees. It also hosts 5 provincial-level scientific and technological innovation teams, 5 provincial-level teaching teams, and 3 provincial-level outstanding grassroots teaching organizations. The School has developed renowned courses such as the provincial-level quality courses Microbiology and Genetic Engineering, as well as the provincial first-class courses Wine Brewing Practice and Medical Biochemistry. In recent years, the School has secured: 16 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, 1 international collaborative research project, 1 Yellow Crane Talent Program project, Over 30 research grants at the provincial and municipal levels. Notable achievements include: 1 Third Prize of the Hubei Provincial Natural Science Award, 3 Hubei Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards.

The School leverages the Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory for Biological Experimental Teaching Demonstration and the Hubei Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Viral Vectors (Gene Therapy). It operates 14 major laboratory clusters, including: Enzyme Engineering, Wine Brewing Training Center, Cell Engineering and Edible Fungi, Fermentation Engineering, Biochemistry, Genetics, Genetic Engineering, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Clinical Biochemical Testing, Pathology, Basic Clinical Laboratory and Hematology, Microscopic Interactive Laboratory. With over 50 laboratories and teaching/research equipment valued at over ¥12 million RMB, the School strongly supports the construction of Hubei Provincial University Innovation Activity Bases. It facilitates the implementation of provincial strategic emerging (pillar) industry talent cultivation projects, provincial professional comprehensive reform pilot programs, and provincial Excellence Engineer Collaborative Education initiatives.

The School is dedicated to cultivating application-oriented and innovative professionals, having established over 50 stable graduate internship and employment bases. Its graduate employment rate has consistently remained above 90%, with over 15% of graduates annually admitted to master’s programs at prestigious domestic and international universities, including Zhejiang University, University of Science and Technology of China, Wuhan University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Graduates primarily engage in teaching, research, production, management, and inspection roles across industries such as biotechnology, chemical engineering, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, bioenergy, environmental resources, biological product processing, and medical laboratory sciences, both within and outside Hubei Province. A large number of alumni have achieved success in entrepreneurship, making significant contributions to local economic and social development.



Program Introduction


Bioengineering (Bachelor’s Program, Science and Engineering, 4-year curriculum, Bachelor of Engineering Degree)


Training Objectives:This program aims to cultivate high-quality application-oriented professionals who master the scientific principles of biotechnology and its industrialization, process technology, and fundamental theories and skills in engineering design. Graduates will be capable of engaging in production, management, design, and exploration of new technologies and development of new products in the field of biotechnology and engineering.

Professional Advantages and Characteristics: This program belongs to the disciplinary direction of Hubei Province’s outstanding characteristic disciplinary cluster and key disciplines, and is a provincial-level brand professional construction project. Students have achieved remarkable results in national life science competitions and provincial biological experiment skill competitions. The graduate employment rate exceeds 95%, and the postgraduate admission rate surpasses 15%, with 70% of admitted students enrolled in renowned domestic and international universities.

Biotechnology (Bachelor’s Program, Science and Engineering, 4-year curriculum, Bachelor of Science Degree)


Training Objectives: This program aims to cultivate high-quality application-oriented talents who master the scientific theories, technical principles, technological processes, and professional skills related to biotechnology. Graduates will be capable of engaging in fundamental research, production, and management in biotechnology and other interdisciplinary fields, while possessing the ability to research new technologies and develop new products.

Students have consistently achieved excellent results in national life science competitions and provincial biological experiment skill competitions. Medical Laboratory Technology (Bachelor’s Program, Science and Engineering, 4-year curriculum, Bachelor of Science Degree)


Training Objectives: This program aims to cultivate applied medical laboratory talents with good professional ethics, who master the basic theories, knowledge, and skills of medical laboratory technology and related disciplines, and possess strong practical abilities, learning capabilities, and innovation and entrepreneurship skills.
