The School of Horticulture at Wuhan University of Bioengineering is one of the longest-established and most distinctive Schools in terms of its programs. It offers three undergraduate programs: Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, and Tea Science, as well as three associate degree programs: Landscape Technology, Horticultural Technology, and Landscape Engineering Technology. The Landscape Architecture program is recognized as a first-class undergraduate program in Hubei Province. The School has been approved for the “14th Five-Year Plan” Hubei Provincial Advantageous and Characteristic Discipline Cluster “Biology and Modern Agriculture,” with Horticulture being designated as a “Chutian Scholar” discipline position in Hubei Province.
The School currently has 65 faculty members, including 29 professors and associate professors, and 20 dual-qualified teachers. In the past three years, it has undertaken over 70 teaching and research projects, including 3 national natural science fund projects and national-level teaching and research projects. It has published 10 textbooks and academic works, 30 academic papers, and obtained over 20 national authorized patents. The Landscape Plant Teaching and Research Section has been awarded the title of Provincial Excellent Grassroots Teaching Organization, and “Flower Production and Application” has been approved as a Provincial First-Class Social Practice Course.
The School boasts a large-scale architectural complex integrating a landscape living room, landscape building, and botanical garden. It has established 11 professional laboratories (including a Landscape Engineering Training Center) and two modern intelligent greenhouses. Additionally, it operates large-scale on- and off-campus internship bases such as Zhihui Farm, Changhe Base, Caijiao Base, and Lichuan Industry-University-Research Application Base. The School has collaborated with renowned enterprises such as Wuhan Lüzhouyuan Agricultural Group, Hui Lu Ecological Technology Group Company, and Wuhan Chuwei Biotechnology Company to establish over 20 off-campus practice platforms. It has been approved as a Provincial Internship and Training Base for Modern Urban Agriculture Demonstration Parks, providing strong support for the cultivation of high-quality applied talents.
The School consistently prioritizes teaching and actively deepens educational reforms, adhering to the integrated innovation and development of industry, academia, research, and application. It continuously explores a “Five-Education Integration” applied talent cultivation model. In 2020, it was approved for the Ministry of Education's New Agricultural Science Research and Reform Practice Project. The School has successively launched specialized programs such as the Landscape Engineering Management Class, Campus Green Team, Summer Entrepreneurship Practice Class, Landscape Practice, Landscape Horticulture Craftsman Talent Cultivation Reform Experimental Class, Landscape Pruning Training Class, Hui Lu Experimental Class, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Camp. It actively organizes students to participate in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions and academic contests, achieving outstanding results. The School has established a comprehensive talent cultivation quality monitoring system, continuously improving the quality of talent cultivation.
Centered around the construction of a “Poetic Campus, Ecological Garden,” the School has established professional characteristic societies such as the Plant Association, Chrysanthemum Association, Orchid Association, Rose Association, Landscape Architecture Association, and Flower Enlightenment World. It regularly hosts events like the Landscape Architecture Month and Landscape Art Festival. Under the guidance of faculty, students have carefully cultivated new varieties of chrysanthemums, roses, and tulips, and annually host campus exhibitions of these flowers, significantly enhancing students' cultural literacy, aesthetic standards, and professional skills. Graduates are highly sought after by employers for their strong practical skills and quick adaptation to job roles, with an employment rate consistently maintained at around 95%. A large number of graduates have started their own businesses in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, Hubei, and other regions, creating jobs and generating positive social benefits. The School has produced a large number of outstanding alumni.
Brief History of Horticulture Education at Wuhan University of Bioengineering
1994: Launched a Landscape Flowers class at the secondary vocational level.
August 1996: Established the Landscape Teaching and Research Section under the Academic Affairs Office of the former Wuhan Bioengineering School.
August 1997: The Landscape Teaching and Research Section moved to the current Yudong Building for independent office work, while piloting the establishment of a Landscape Department to manage all secondary vocational classes of the original Landscape Flowers program.
1999: The school was upgraded to a School, and the Landscape Technology associate degree program (Urban Landscape Design and Management direction) was approved, enrolling the first class of School students in September 2000.
November 2000: The Horticultural Technology associate degree program (Ornamental Horticulture direction) was approved, starting enrollment in 2001.
September 2004: Enrolled the first class of undergraduate students for the Landscape program (in conjunction with Wuhan Institute of Technology).
November 2004: The Landscape Engineering Technology associate degree program was approved, starting enrollment in 2005.
June 2005: Wuhan University of Bioengineering was upgraded to a university, and the Landscape program was approved as an undergraduate program, enrolling its first full-time students in September 2005. The Landscape Department established two teaching and research sections: Landscape Plants and Landscape Design and Engineering.
December 2008: The Horticulture undergraduate program was approved, enrolling full-time students in September 2009.
December 2013: The Agricultural Biotechnology program was approved, starting enrollment in Life Science and Technology School in September 2014, and was transferred to the School of Horticulture in July 2019, with enrollment discontinued in July 2021.
September 2018: The Landscape Department was reorganized into the School of Horticulture.
December 2019: The Landscape program was approved as a first-class undergraduate program in Hubei Province.
October 2022: The School of Horticulture established three teaching and research sections: Landscape Plants and Design, Landscape Engineering, and Horticulture and Landscape Plants.
March 2024: The Tea Science program was approved as an undergraduate program, enrolling students in September 2024.
The School of Horticulture and Landscape currently offers three undergraduate programs: Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, and Tea Science, and three associate degree programs: Landscape Technology, Landscape Engineering Technology, and Horticultural Technology. It has three teaching and research sections: Landscape Design and Engineering, Horticulture and Landscape Plants, and Tea Science.
Landscape Architecture (Bachelor's Degree, Four-Year Program, Awarded Bachelor of Agriculture)
Professional Advantages and Features: This program is a first-class undergraduate program in Hubei Province and a national second bachelor's degree enrollment program. It cultivates high-quality applied talents who understand landscape design, specialize in plant maintenance, and excel in on-site construction organization and management through a talent cultivation model that is “demand-oriented, project-driven, industry-education integrated, and collaboratively advanced.”
Core Courses: Landscape Trees, Floriculture, Landscape Plant Cultivation, Plant Landscaping, Landscape Design, Landscape Engineering, Landscape Green Space Planning and Design.
Graduate Employment Fields: Work in landscape companies, parks, scenic areas, planning and design institutes, urban construction units, etc., engaging in nursery plant maintenance, green plant construction, landscape design, planting design, garden construction, landscape budgeting, or further graduate studies.
Horticulture (Bachelor's Degree, Four-Year Program, Awarded Bachelor of Agriculture)
Professional Advantages and Features: Horticulture is a provincial talent position discipline in Hubei Province. It aims to actively serve modern agriculture and local economic development, cultivating high-quality applied talents who meet the needs of the modern horticulture market through in-depth industry-academia cooperation and industry-education integration.
Core Courses: Pomology, Vegetable Science, Floriculture, Horticultural Plant Breeding, Horticultural Product Storage and Marketing, Horticultural Plant Pests and Diseases, Protected Horticulture, Plant Landscaping.
Graduate Employment Fields: Work in horticulture companies, research institutes, etc., engaging in horticultural plant production and management, horticultural plant landscaping and maintenance, horticultural product storage and marketing, or further graduate studies.
Tea Science (Bachelor's Degree, Four-Year Program, Awarded Bachelor of Agriculture)
Professional Advantages and Features: Tea Science is a scarce program in Hubei Province. It aims to actively serve modern agriculture and local economic development, cultivating high-quality applied talents who meet the needs of the modern tea industry through in-depth industry-academia cooperation and industry-education integration.
Core Courses: Tea Biochemistry, Tea Processing, Tea Plant Cultivation, Tea Evaluation and Inspection, Tea Art, Tea Marketing, Tea Plant Breeding, Creative Blended Tea.
Graduate Employment Fields: Work in tea and related production, operation, and trade enterprises, agricultural extension departments, engaging in tea garden cultivation management, tea processing (tea product research and development, tea quality inspection and deep processing technology research), new tea drinks and tea sales (tea enterprise e-commerce operations, tea product procurement and international trade), or further graduate studies.
Landscape Technology (Associate Degree, Three-Year Program)

Horticultural Technology (Associate Degree, Three-Year Program)
Professional Advantages and Features: This program focuses on cultivating high-quality technical and skilled talents who can engage in horticultural plant breeding, cultivation, maintenance management, and plant landscaping.
Core Courses: Floriculture, Fruit Tree Cultivation and Maintenance, Vegetable Cultivation and Maintenance, Horticultural Plant Pest and Disease Control, Floral Design, Plant Landscaping Technology, Horticultural Product Quality Analysis.
Graduate Employment Fields: Work in horticulture enterprises, urban construction departments, forest parks, forest health bases, etc., engaging in horticultural plant variety development, breeding, cultivation, maintenance, plant landscaping, indoor and outdoor floral decoration, etc. This program allows students to pursue a bachelor's degree in Horticulture through a specialized upgrade examination.
Landscape Engineering Technology (Associate Degree, Three-Year Program)
